Platform Ponderings

Much has been said already about Adobe’s new approach to marketing it’s Flash “Platform” http://www.adobe.com/flashplatform/ so I’m not going to beat a dead horse.  But I find it very interesting.  Flash has always been a bit of a square peg in the round hole of web and multimedia design.  To really use it effectively the user needs to be adept at both design and development, which is a talent fairly hard to come by in one individual.  In order to overcome this issue, Adobe has basically taken flash and split it into 2 parts, design (Flash Catalyst) and Development (Flex Builder).  My only concern is that these programs will eventually replace flash and perpetuate the industry’s pandering to “Designers” and “Developers”.  Plus I’ve never been that impressed with mxml.

Expelled

I just saw Ben Stein’s recent film, “Expelled”.  It is a documentary that makes several arguments for the possibility of Intelligent Design.  It also exposes some conspiracy theories about the scientific establishment’s suppression of research in the area of intelligent design.  I found the film very interesting.  The arguments it made were very convincing, and Stein gave some new perspectives on the possibility of ID that I had never considered.  The thing that I probably found most interesting about the film was the mode of delivery.  The film was presented in a separatist manner usually dominated by the left, and to be honest had a very “Michael Moore” feel about it.  I highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants to hear an intelligent discussion about the creation of life on earth.

In the News

I had an interesting discussion with one of my professors the other day that I thought I would share.  I am a self proclaimed “News Junkie”, rabidly gathering news about anything from any source I can like an addict running free in a methadone clinic.  I learned early in my media consumption that there are essentially two types of news sources: Sources that claim neutrality (mostly mainstream) and those that do not (blogs, opinions, etc.).  I find value in news from both types, but an important part of processing news is having an appropriate context with which to frame it.

Therefore, the problem lies with those news sources that claim neutrality but in fact have hidden agendas.  They are obviously not neutral, and in my opinion depart further from neutrality every day.  The “We report, you decide” tagline is almost a parody.  Even my beloved NPR has an obvious agenda.  In fact, when I check my RSS feeds in the morning I routinely read the same story from 3 or 4 different news sources in order to get a proper view of what actually happened.

I don’t mind this process, because it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside to form my own opinion and not have it subliminally dictated to me based on a corporate agenda.  I’m sure it’s my own naiveté that makes me want to believe there was ever a time when news sources didn’t have hidden agendas, but I also think that human nature innately wants to be able trust.

Having said all of that, I actually think that the public today has a greater opportunity to find truth in the news media than it ever has.  In the past, there were a limited number of news sources, so if they had an agenda you didn’t have a great chance of figuring it out.  Now we have so many different points of view that if you can filter through the opinions, you can actually get a better view of what’s going on.

This is where my professor disagrees with me.  His theory is that mainstream news sources are so far removed from the truth, and have such different ontological perspectives attached to their agendas that no truth can be found in them.

What do you think?  I’d love to hear another perspective.

An ode to AS2

USANA’s Media Center

I’m not sure I ever showed it here, but the “Media Center” project I did for USANA has been up for a while and seems to be working well. It was a great project for me because of the sole ownership I was given over it. I got to do everything from conception to code to design to completion, which doesn’t happen very much in the design world. Anyways, here is the link if you are interested. And I’m starting on V2 in a couple of weeks :)

Kudos to Flash on Tap

As mentioned in a previous post, Flash on Tap has been postponed until May of 2009.  The schedule change incurred some rescheduling fees (airline, etc..), which I thought that Flash on Tap should be responsible for.  I wrote some fairly negative things about Flash on Tap on my blog, which were eventually seen by Laura Des Enfants, one of the conference coordinators.  Laura handled the situation superbly.  She contacted me, took responsibility for the additional expenses, and helped put to rest some of my concerns about the conference in a friendly way.  I look forward to attending in May, and I am very impressed with the Flash on Tap staff and their willingness to help.

Good job Flash on Tap!

How I got Screwed by Flash on Tap

**Please read this UPDATE before reading this post**

Ok, let me set the scenario. I lived in Boston for two years, and it’s one of my favorite places on earth. I now live in the west, and making trips back to Boston is hard financially and logistically ( I have 2 young kids and those plane tickets aren’t cheap).

I am a flash developer for a great company that doesn’t mind investing money in things like conferences to get quality results. So when I heard about the Flash on Tap conference in Boston this October, I asked if they would send me and they said yes.

It was perfect. Boston in the Fall. We bought a plane ticket for my wife and even booked a hotel room for an extra couple of nights.

So yesterday, 3 weeks away from the convention, I got an email from the hotel that Flash on Tap is being held in that said my room had been canceled. I called the hotel, and they broke the news - “Oh, your conference has been canceled”.

After contacting a Flash on Tap rep I found that it was true - The event had been postponed until MAY OF NEXT YEAR. Their apology email started with the phrase “We have both good news and bad news”…. where the *%#&@! is the good news????? Even if I WANT to go the stupid Flash on Tap conference next year, they just cost me an extra $350 in flight and hotel room rescheduling. But if I don’t want to go, and right now I really don’t want to go, I’m out much more.

For what it’s worth, here’s my conspiracy theory: With the Red Sox doing well and millions to be made in the World Series tourism market, the Hotel and Flash on Tap simply made a deal. Why give away discounted rooms to a bunch of programmers when they could charge up the wazoo to World Series goers?

I have to believe that I’m not the only one in this situation. What is Flash on Tap going to do about all of the lost money due to rescheduling? And why the heck would anyone want to go to Boston in the Spring? To see the mud and dirty snow?

Flash on Tap, I implore you - Make this right. Figure out a way and do it.

Back to School

Well, I just completed my first assignments as a graduate student.  I am quite a bit rustier that I thought I would be.  What have I done?  Sorry Kelly.
